Kate McCall, Private Eye is the first of a series featuring a novice private investigator with more spunk than sense.
Confident and optimistic, Kate McCall is convinced she can make a success of her private investigation business despite the fact that she hasn’t had a single case. Not so optimistic are the members of her big Irish family, especially her sisters, who are there at every opportunity to point out Kate’s dire financial state and to encourage her to find a steady office job. When three investigations suddenly fall into her lap Kate grabs onto this windfall, and in just a few short days unravels the secrets behind the collapse of a high school athlete, the theft of her ex-boyfriend’s pastry recipes, and a question of paternity posed by a querulous old man. Tagging along as reluctant assistants are Kate’s charming, unemployed cousin Nick, and Pickles, her little dog of indeterminate breed. Teenagers with attitude, a tempestuous French chef, a mysterious handbag designer, and a peculiar, ever-present neighbor join other quirky characters in places as diverse as a haphazard commercial bakery, a Latino nightclub, and a run-down sports bar to provide Kate with vital information and clues. Every step of the way her financial state worsens and someone in her extended family interferes, but no matter how empty her bank account, how loud her family protests, or how much she annoys her clients, Kate refuses to be distracted from her goal finding the truth in every case.
Fast paced and very funny, Kate McCall, Private Eye is a fresh, character-driven story featuring a fearless and impulsive young woman absolutely determined to make a success of her business on her own terms and in her own way. Written for fans of humorous fiction, as well as those who like imperfect female PIs and quirky cases, this lighthearted series will also appeal to anyone who enjoys a great read, memorable characters and a happy ending.

As a long time reader of throwaway mysteries, I have to confess I've grown weary of the Evanovich knock offs. I don't mind a good derivative; after all very little is new under the sun, but only good imitations are really flattery. The eponymous heroine of Kate McCall, Private Eye has some surface similarities to Stephanie Plum, always broke with car trouble, wacky family, inept skills, however enough differences exist that I wasn't thinking every other page "wow JUST like SP." Furthermore, the plot rivals any of the sticky situations Evanovich ever stuck SP in. In fact, I'd say that the book borrows as much from Carl Hiaasen's "wacky mystery" playbook as it does from Evanovich's plucky one.I don't want to give too much away, but suffice it to say, we meet Kate, who resides in Washington State (home to author Tina Lencioni), struggling to get her private investigator business off the ground. She has a hilarious sidekick, a recently paroled, con man cousin, and a mysterious mentor with a storied past who also happens to be her much feared landlord aunt's ex. The "mysteries" take the form of her first cases, allowing the author to take McCall into a range of settings and situations with minimal contrivance and to introduce new characters rather seamlessly.
Having also read my share of Kindle published mysteries I'd be remiss if I did not note that not only is this one well written with almost no grammatical errors, clunky sentences or bizarre word choices that smack of thesaurus abuse (although still typos geez is proofreading a lost art?), but also it is bargain priced. I'd be curious to know if the .99 price increases the volume sufficiently to compete with the more common $2.99. Snap up all four in the series for your vacation reading as these are quick reads!

Kate McCall Private Eye edition by Tina Lencioni Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
This was a fun book to read. Although I thought it was going to have some murder and mystery to it. I guess I though that because our star, Kate McCall was a private investigator, therefore murder investigations?
Kate had her PI license for a year and did not have one case yet. Things were very tough for her and she refused to get a job, even a temp job, so she was on the verge of loosing her apartment, her phone and her electricity plus she had no food in her house at all.
Then the story really got interesting. She suddenly got three clients, one being her mother, then her friend needed her help then a old man picked up her card at her Uncle's restaurant. Kate could not charge her mother or her friend but she was hoping to make something from the old man. One paying customer was better then none.
This really was a fun book to read. I did not want to put it down. Just do not expect any murders. This is a clean cut story.Tina Lencioni did a great job. But the story ended too soon for me. Although this IS only book one. I will be looking forward to reading book two. I think you will enjoy reading this fun PI story.
the writer spends a lot of time detailing Kate's life events. she comes across as naive and inept. she doesn't seem to learn from her mistakes and has a low wisdom level. she is compassionate and a likable person. But, there is no reason she will make a good investigator. Except that she's spent years hiding things from her family and friends. you are left with the feeling that this job too will fade for her because she doesn't know who she is and isn't responsible enough to plan. I think the writer could have taken this character down better roads. developed the character into someone who had a reason to be a good private detective. instead in the next book you expect her to be living with her parents, again, and still struggling to find a job she is willing to do.
This book is hilarious. Kate started a PI business, but has no paying customers. One of her many cousins, a con man, is living with her and working as her assistant. She finally gets a case and it soon snowballs to her having three cases, all nonpaying. She tries to balance them while dealing with a crazy neighbor, the nosiest family ever, and anything and everything that can go wrong does. While living in dire straights she still wants to get to the truth with all her cases. You will laugh your way through this story and won't be able to wait for the next.
I have read all four of the Kate McCall series and I love the writing style of this author. These books are funny and entertaining reading. This is a misfit group of friends (and enemies) that all belong in a "how to get along with other people" mental health group or a kindergarten class for four year olds. I wish there were more books in this series I would read them all in a minute. They remind me of the Stephanie Plum books but there is no boy friend and no crazy grandmother. There is however a nutty cousin, a crazy neighbor and his introverted writer son, a family that wants her to get a "real" job and some other crazies thrown in for good measure. There are no off color remarks, no bad language just funny and crazy antics of a young woman trying to make her way in the outside world as a PI. Do yourself a favor and read these books.
Kate McCall is having some trouble getting her private-eye business off the ground. She dives into some (unpaid) cases for her mom and for a friend--and suddenly the action and the laughs are non-stop. Kate is a nut case but she does have a certain bulldog tenacity and somehow she's asking the right questions. The characters in this book are pretty true to life--the charming cousin, the family who's in her face about her lack of income--and the situations seem like they could happen--but only to Kate. Well-written, well-rounded fun. I just bought the next three books in the series, and I look forward to more surprises from this plucky private investigator.
